Great cities in the neighbourhood

Castles, harbours and ancient ruins — all within an easy drive.

Paleros is wonderfully placed for exploring. Within an hour you can wander a Venetian castle, stroll a colourful seafront, walk among Roman ruins, and browse an island harbour town. Each has its own character, and together they make the days between beach trips just as memorable.

I.

Vonitsa — the castle town on the gulf

About 20 minutes away on the shore of the Amvrakikos Gulf, Vonitsa is crowned by a striking Venetian fortress with sweeping views over the water. The town below is laid-back and pretty, with a palm-lined waterfront and tavernas serving the gulf's famous shrimp and fresh fish. Climb to the castle for the views, then eat by the sea.

II.

Preveza — seafront city of fish and festivals

Reached via the undersea tunnel, Preveza is the lively city of the region — a long, colourful seafront, a maze of pedestrian lanes, and a deserved reputation for seafood (especially its sardines). It has a buzzing café and dining scene and a summer festival calendar. Good for a half-day of strolling, shopping and a long lunch.

III.

Nikopolis — the 'City of Victory'

Just north of Preveza lie the extensive ruins of Nikopolis, the 'City of Victory' founded by the Roman emperor Augustus to mark his defeat of Antony and Cleopatra at the nearby Battle of Actium in 31 BC. Walls, an odeon, a theatre and beautiful early-Christian mosaics survive, with a museum to bring it to life. A fascinating contrast to the beaches.

IV.

Lefkada town — island harbour charm

Across the bridge, Lefkada town offers a relaxed island-capital feel: a waterfront marina, old streets with characterful timber-and-metal houses (built to survive earthquakes), markets, and plenty of tavernas and bars. Easy to combine with a beach day on the island.
